The Hong Kong government plans to set up an unsecured personal loan borrowing limit, starting consultation next year.
The Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, christopher hui, stated in a blog that the Treasury and the Companies Registry have been closely monitoring the market situation of the licensed money lending industry. Currently, the Treasury is formulating specific measures along various directions, such as regulating lenders and enhancing promotion and education, with plans to launch related consultations in the first half of next year. The bureau is studying a benchmark based on the borrower's monthly income to establish a borrowing limit for unsecured personal loans. If the borrower's monthly income is below a certain level, the unsecured personal loans that lenders can approve cannot exceed a certain percentage of that borrower's monthly income. The bureau is developing specific levels regarding the monthly income and borrowing limits.
