Activist investor Jana plans to push Markel (MKL.US) to spin off its private investment Business.
Activist investor Scott Ostfeld, managing partner at Jana Partners, stated that Jana Partners has increased its shareholding in the insurance company Markel (MKL.US) and is pushing the company to explore divesting or selling its private investment business. Ostfeld described Markel as severely undervalued and believes the company will benefit from improvements in its core insurance business operations. He considers the entire company to be an attractive acquisition target for large insurance firms. According to Markel's website, the company also has a unit named Markel Venture.
